HE BROUGHT HER TO MY SON’S GRADUATION

PART 1 —

Thirty-seven-year-old Monica Reyes arrived at her son’s college graduation and found her husband saving the front-row seat for another woman.

Thirty-year-old Brielle Shaw, his marketing assistant, sat beside Victor in a fitted cobalt-blue dress and white blazer, holding the bouquet Monica had ordered that morning.

Monica stopped in the aisle.

Victor saw her and sighed.

“Please don’t start.”

Monica looked at the flowers.

“Those are for Mateo.”

Brielle smiled.

“Victor said I should give them to him.”

Monica’s face tightened.

“You mean my husband gave you my son’s flowers?”

Victor leaned closer.

“If you had paid more attention to this family instead of your restaurant, maybe somebody else wouldn’t have had to.”

Monica stared at him.

Her catering business had paid Mateo’s tuition for four years.

Brielle crossed one leg over the other.

“Victor deserves someone who knows how to make time for him.”

Monica looked directly at her.

“You knew he was married.”

Brielle shrugged.

“You knew he was unhappy.”

Then Victor pointed toward an empty seat three rows back.

“Sit there. Don’t ruin Mateo’s day.”

Several parents nearby turned.

Monica’s shoulders dropped.

She picked up her purse.

For one second Victor looked satisfied.

Then Mateo’s name was called.

He crossed the stage, took his diploma, and looked toward the front row.

He didn’t wave at Victor.

He pointed at Monica.

“Mom, come here!”

The auditorium erupted in applause as Monica stepped into the aisle.

Victor’s smile disappeared.

Mateo took the microphone.

“My mother worked nights for four years to keep me here.”

Brielle went still.

Mateo continued:

“And since Dad wants to talk about who showed up for this family…”

Victor stood abruptly.

“Mateo.”

The young man held up his phone.

“I think everyone should hear the voicemail he sent me last night.”

Monica froze.

Victor’s face went white.

Mateo pressed PLAY.

Victor’s recorded voice filled the auditorium:

“Keep your mother busy after graduation. Brielle and I need the house to ourselves.”
